The University of Hawaii at Hilo men’s soccer team will try to build on one of its most complete efforts of the season when it hosts Dixie State at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
On Thursday, the Vulcans shutout California Baptist 3-0 behind goals by Ian McBride, Max Darris and Mike Reckmeyer.
After going scoreless in four of its past five matches, the Vulcans (4-6-1, 2-4 Pacific West Conference) equaled their season-high for goals in a match. Goalkeeper Tyler Hoffman stopped all five shots he faced.
“We finished our chances and that is the only stat that matters,” director of soccer Lance Thompson said in a university release. “We could have won the other day by a couple of goals. We could have lost the other day by a couple of goals, but we didn’t. It could have gone down either way; it all just came down to finishing chances.”
The Lady Vulcans (5-4-2, 2-1-3) weren’t as lucky. They got a goal from Khari Golden but played their second consecutive draw, falling to 0-1-2 on their homestand.
The men host Dixie (1-6-1, 1-3) at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, and the women play Dixie (4-5-1, 2-2) at 3 p.m.
